Kids College Expands Statewide

Monday, April 28, 2025

This summer, Indiana University is broadening the reach of its acclaimed Kids College program, bringing a hands-on, college-readiness experience to rising middle school students at six IU campuses across the state. Kids College lays the foundation for Indiana’s next generation of leaders and innovators by offering middle school students from low-income households an immersive introduction to college life, career pathways, and academic possibilities.

The Lilly Endowment Inc.’s Indiana Youth Programs on Campus funds the free student-enrichment program, which seeks to uplift students from underserved communities. During the day camp, students explore academic subjects, connect with IU faculty and students, and begin to imagine themselves not just attending college—but thriving in it.

“The expansion of Kids College to six campuses reflects IU’s commitment to serving youth across Indiana,’ said Ellen Szarleta, director of the Center for Urban and Regional Excellence at IU Northwest where Kids College got its start. “In collaboration with community partners, Kids College provides region-specific college and career learning opportunities that share a common state-wide interest in delivering high-quality programs to underserved youth. With this expansion, young people in all parts of Indiana will know what it’s like to be on a college campus and to participate in programs that will help them prepare for college and a successful career.”

Customized by Campus, Unified in Mission

Each IU campus adapts Kids College to reflect local strengths and community needs, while staying true to the program’s shared goals—college readiness, personal development, and civic engagement.

IU Indianapolis

In the heart of the state capital, students experience life on a college campus while exploring real-world careers in healthcare and law. Field trips to nearby landmarks like the NCAA Headquarters and Indiana State Museum—just steps from campus—are paired with hands-on workshops in nursing and legal studies, highlighting the rich and unique opportunities IUI offers. Students participate in mock trials, conduct research in university libraries, and engage with faculty mentors—all designed to build familiarity and confidence with higher education.

IU Columbus

Through a close partnership with iEngage Youth Civic Empowerment Camp, Kids College at IU Columbus empowers students to identify and address pressing community issues through inquiry-based projects and collaboration with local leaders. Activities are designed to nurture leadership, public speaking, and problem-solving skills, helping students connect civic engagement to college and career goals.

IU Kokomo

Building on the success of IUK’s Ignite Your Future program, this STEM-focused camp brings students into direct contact with innovation and technology. Thanks to a collaboration with Marion Community Schools, students visit NearSpace Marion and participate in creative workshops such as Pixel Pioneers (coding and game design), Experiment Extravaganza (hands-on labs), and Tech Titans. Faculty, college mentors, and local professionals help guide students as they explore the real-world applications of science and technology.

IU Fort Wayne

Set in one of Indiana’s healthcare hubs, this camp gives students a close-up look at careers in medicine, nursing, and allied health. Through interactive labs and simulations, participants build awareness of the education required for healthcare professions—preparing them for pathways aligned with regional workforce needs.

IU Northwest

At the birthplace of Kids College, students experience a two-week “college simulation,” choosing majors and minors, attending workshops, and culminating in a commencement ceremony. Offerings include business, performing arts, technology, and leadership. The theme, “My Story. My Voice,” encourages students to use their experiences to shape a positive future for their communities.

IU South Bend

Blending classroom learning with real-world adventure, this camp features faculty-led instruction alongside field trips like a visit to Potawatomi Zoo. Students explore academic subjects while also learning about campus life, financial aid, and student engagement opportunities—helping them visualize a complete college journey.

Connecting to Statewide College Opportunities

A cornerstone of the Kids College experience is helping families understand and navigate the 21st Century Scholars program, Indiana’s statewide initiative to support income-eligible students with four years of college tuition at participating institutions. Kids College workshops walk families through the application process and outline the steps needed to maintain scholarship eligibility throughout high school.
