The Science of Reading brings together decades of research about how children learn to read. At the base are five pillars proven to aid young readers: phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Recent data from Indiana's 2022-23 IREAD-3 assessment points out how important these skills are. Today, 18% of Indiana third graders have not mastered the reading abilities they need. The need to strengthen literacy instruction is clear and urgent.
The Lilly Endowment's Advancing Science of Reading in Indiana initiative granted IU's Office of School Partnerships $1.5 million to update courses, curriculum, and teacher training to ensure IU's graduates were prepared to teach reading in alignment with the latest research. IU is the state's largest producer of teachers, so we play a key role in shaping the next generation of confident readers.
