Designed for middle-school students preparing for the next big step in their academic and personal development, Kids College pre-college readiness program is a two-week program offering a unique blend of educational activities and community involvement.

June 17–28, 2024 (no classes on Juneteenth)
Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.– 4:30 p.m.

Students entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in fall 2024.

Igniting Minds, Inspiring Futures

 

Before the camp starts, we’re hosting an evening event for parents and families. This event is a great opportunity to learn more about the camp and the 21st Century Scholars program. Mentors from community groups like the 100 Black Men of Greater South Bend will be on hand, offering support and building lasting relationships with the students.

During the camp, students will be organized into four small groups of 20 kids each. These groups will be guided by experienced faculty members and follow a rotating schedule similar to a typical middle school, which will allow students to explore various topics every day. 

Through partnerships with local organizations we will provide hassle-free transportation and nutritious meals—including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks—throughout the program. The two-week session will culminate in a special family showcase event, where the students will display their projects. It's a wonderful way to see what they've learned and created!

Camp Objectives

Kids College students will engage in a wide range of activities and classes covering a variety of subjects such as:

  • Business
  • Anthropology
  • Health sciences
  • Art

Faculty will open each day with a focus on growth mindset and social/emotional learning. Expert instructors and professors from IU South Bend will guide the students through hands-on projects, interactive lessons, and collaborative learning experiences.

In addition to the academic curriculum, camp organizers will plan recreational activities (team-building exercises, outdoor games, etc.) to create a well-rounded experience for everyone involved.

  • Academic Enrichment—provide students with a unique opportunity to engage in academic subjects beyond the traditional middle-school curriculum while introducing them to new concepts, inspiring their curiosity, and fostering a love for learning.
  • Skill Development—help students develop essential skills that are valuable for academic success, including critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and creativity. Through hands-on projects and interactive activities, students can enhance their skills and become more well-rounded learners.
  • Exploration of Interests—provide students with a chance to explore various academic disciplines by offering a diverse range of courses and activities. Students discover subjects they may wish to pursue in the future while gaining a better understanding of their passions and talents.
  • Exposure to University Life—familiarize students with the college experience as they engage with professors, utilize campus resources, and experience campus resources, while demystifying what it is like to attend a university.
  • Social Growth and Community Building—foster a supportive and inclusive community where students can develop friendships, build connections, and collaborate with their peers through team-building activities, group projects, and shared experiences.
