Strategy 1: Strengthening Communities Through P-12 Engagement

IU supports local, regional, and state postsecondary and workforce objectives and initiatives. Each campus develops community-centric models of engagement that ensure reciprocity, take asset-based approaches, and support P-12 partner needs.

Pathways PLUS

Indiana University partners with high schools across the state to provide high school students the opportunity to explore and experiment with a career path.

The Pathways PLUS program combines field-specific college classes, student support services, and hands-on experience to try out career choices—all while students are still in high school. At campuses like IU East, students build valuable skills, set career goals, and accelerate their college education.

Courses are taught by IU professors, often on an IU campus, giving students the opportunity to create a connection to the IU community. Pathways PLUS experiences help students make an informed decision about their college major and career goals while getting a head start on college courses. Pathways have been developed for education majors with plans to expand to other fields and disciplines.

Career Coaching Initiative

Indiana University is proud to support the Indiana Commission for Higher Education’s prestigious Career Coaching Initiative, a substantial investment preparing students to make informed decisions about their college and career paths.

Through the innovative program “College + Career = Success,” campuses such as IU East deliver personalized career coaching and support services. This is a transformative opportunity for IU to provide consistent, individualized guidance, empowering students to pursue their aspirations with confidence and clarity. Focusing on grades 6–12, the program engages students through small group discussions, career presentations, and preparatory activities for postsecondary education. By offering access to IU’s resources both within school settings and on university campuses, the initiative bridges the gap between secondary education and higher learning. Recognizing the importance of family support, it also extends opportunities for family member involvement.

Using Indiana’s Comprehensive Career Coaching and Navigation Framework, which was developed in collaboration with the Indiana Department of Education and other stakeholders, the initiative prioritizes communities with diverse needs and leverages the expertise of career coaches with real-world experience. IU shares the vision of erasing boundaries between P-12 education, higher education, and the workforce, and is committed to providing students with meaningful pathways tailored to their unique skills and interests.
