Registered Apprenticeships

Registered Apprenticeship Program

An innovative service to the state that offers a comprehensive pathway for aspiring teachers to gain practical experience as an apprentice in their home school district, while earning their bachelor’s degree and full state teaching licensure in elementary, special, or secondary education.

The program is built on the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium Model Core Teaching Standards, which emphasize learner development, learning differences, and the creation of inclusive and engaging learning environments. Apprentices will be trained to understand and apply content knowledge, use a variety of instructional strategies, and engage in continuous professional learning and ethical practice.

Program Highlights

Hybrid apprenticeship model

The program combines on-the-job learning and mentoring with classroom instruction and coursework, ensuring that apprentice teachers develop the skills and knowledge they’ll need to excel in the classroom.

Progressive wage schedule

Apprentices earn wages that increase during their time in the program, as determined by the hours toward their degree and competencies mastered. Employers have the flexibility to offer higher wages.

Comprehensive related instruction

Apprentices engage in IU coursework to earn their bachelor’s degree in education from an accredited educator preparation program. Currently participating campuses are IU East, IU Kokomo, and IU Southeast.

By mentoring local talent, we will not only fill teaching positions but also foster a dedicated workforce likely to remain in our community for years to come.
